Test Method Explanation

Dead pixels are defective sub-pixels that remain permanently black. Stuck pixels remain lit as a single color (usually red, green, or blue). This test displays full-screen solid primary colors. By cycling through them, you can easily spot dark specks on bright backgrounds or glowing dots on dark backgrounds.

How to inspect your screen:

  • Clean your display: Dust or smudge particles can easily look like dead pixels. Clean the screen surface gently with a micro-fiber cloth before beginning.
  • Scan each color carefully: Look across the entire surface of the screen in each color. Stuck sub-pixels will stand out on black and white screens.
  • Verify in fullscreen: Make sure no taskbars or browser controls are visible as stuck pixels often hide at the edges of the panel.

Display panels are complex pieces of hardware comprised of millions of individual liquid crystal or organic light-emitting diode (OLED) sub-pixels. When buying a new monitor, laptop, or smartphone, it is crucial to perform a thorough dead pixel test to verify the integrity of the display. Using a web-based dead pixel tester is the fastest and most efficient way to inspect your screen for defective, stuck, or dead sub-pixels without needing to download complex local diagnostic software.

What is a Dead Pixel vs. a Stuck Pixel?

It is important to understand the technical difference when testing for dead pixels. A true "dead pixel" is a defective sub-pixel that remains completely unlit, showing up as a tiny black dot regardless of what is rendering on the display. This is most visible when displaying a white background, often called a black screen dead pixel test. Conversely, a "stuck pixel" occurs when one or more of the sub-pixels (red, green, or blue) is stuck in an active state, remaining continuously illuminated as a single bright, colorful dot. Stuck pixels are usually easiest to locate when displaying a dark or black background.

How to Run an Online Dead Pixel Test

When utilizing the monitor dead pixel test, look closely at each color panel:

  • White Screen: Perfect for identifying black specks or completely dead sub-pixels.
  • Black Screen: Ideal for finding stuck pixels that glow red, green, or blue, as well as checking for backlight bleed at the edges of the display.
  • Red, Green, Blue Screens: Used to systematically inspect each individual sub-pixel. For example, if a pixel remains black on a green screen but works on red and blue, the green sub-pixel is defective.

LCD, LED, and OLED Screen Inspections

Different display panel technologies suffer from defects in unique ways. Running an lcd dead pixel test on a traditional liquid-crystal display panel is standard practice. LCD and LED screens utilize a constant backlight, and stuck or dead pixels are caused by defective transistors that fail to regulate liquid crystal light gates. Can You Fix Stuck or Dead Pixels?

If your test for dead pixels reveals a defect, there are a few methods you can try to resolve it. Stuck pixels are much easier to repair than dead pixels because the transistor is still receiving power.

  • Software flashing: Rapidly cycle colors on the affected area for 10-20 minutes to try and force the transistor to reset.
  • Physical pressure method: Turn off your monitor. Take a damp cloth (to avoid scratching) and apply gentle, focused pressure directly on the stuck pixel using a rounded object like a stylus or pencil eraser. Turn the screen back on while maintaining light pressure, then release.
  • Heat method: Dampen a washcloth in warm water, place it in a plastic zip bag, and gently hold it against the stuck pixel area for a few minutes. The heat can encourage liquid crystals to flow correctly.

Note that true dead pixels (which remain permanently black) usually indicate physical hardware damage or a broken connection, and cannot be repaired using software. If your display is under warranty and has multiple defects, you may be eligible for a replacement. Most manufacturers adhere to the ISO 13406-2 standard, which allows a certain number of pixel defects per million before a panel is deemed defective.
